Fast Friday review: My favorite printer

Some of you may be looking for a new printer now or in the new future.
Since 2008, I have relied almost exclusively on a black and white laser printer. The cost per print is so cheap.
What about color? The 3 or 4 times I have needed to print in color, I have simply used Staples or a Fed Ex Office (formerly Kinkos). Our local library also offers color prints for 50 cents a page. I got 5 years out of a Dell laser printer, but by 2013 their quality had gone down significantly. After recommending a Brother MFC laser to a client in January 2012, I purchased my own in the fall of 2013. It is the best printer I have ever owned. My Brother prints, copies, scans and faxes. It prints two sided copies. It works well with Mac and Windows and it prints wirelessly.

The newest version of my printer is the Brother MFC 2740. It adds two more key feature — AirPrint and Google Print. This means you can print directly from your iPhone, iPad or Android device without a big hassle. I highly recommend this model. You can get the MFC 2740 for $229 from Amazon (be sure to choose the sold by Amazon option).

The toner cartridges are part number TN 630 (for normal yield) or TN 660 (for high yield — more pages). I would personally go with the 660 for about $50, unless you print infrequently. If you are a light printer, then an Epson injket printer would probably be best (which will give you color also). Ask for recommendations if needed.

As with most laser printers, you need to replace the drum (cradle that the cartridge rests in) every 4th to 5th cartridge. That goes for about $80 and is model DR 630.

If you want to shop locally, Staples will match Amazon’s price on the printer. Simply print out page 1 and bring it to Staples or mention it when you call Staples. Staples price is $300, so the $229 at Amazon is a huge savings. Staples is very competitive on the cost of the toner and drum ($1 more on the toner and $7 cheaper on the drum) based on their website. Most laser printers come with only a starter cartridge in the box, so you should get a full toner cartridge up front. You do not need a drum at the time of purchase.
